WHY is unique in that we run our own sapphire mine in Sri Lanka, so if it's the finest and most distinctive Sapphires you've been looking for, you've come to the exactly the right place!
Sapphires are one of our favourite jewels. They are in fact the mineral corundum; a red corundum is termed a ruby, but in any other colour it is called a sapphire. So you will find sparkling sapphires of every hue; purple, champagne yellow, mandarin, peach, sky and cornflower blues, the very rare padparadscha, green, bronze, rose petal and deep pinks. They are also very hard, being second only to diamond, and are thus so practical. They span a really wide price range; our stock stones start from around £40 and go to tens of thousands.
We are often asked why we have a sapphire mine in Sri Lanka, and the reasons are many. Firstly we love sapphires but we believe in forging links between different countries, cultures and businesses, as closer links give a sense of global community and responsibility. Many people in less economically developed countries depend heavily on their natural resources and the export of precious gems provides them with well needed incoming currency. We enthusiastically support ethical and fair trading practices, and believe in the importance of people understanding the positive impact of their purchase decisions.
To put words into practice we run our sapphire mine on a co-operative basis with the miners all gaining a share of the gems found.
Sapphire mining in Sri Lanka is as environmentally sustainable as possible, with the land being returned to farming once the mine is worked out. The mine project is multi-cultural and spans all religious faiths, so encourages a sense of community and tolerance. We aim to re-invest 10% of funds from the sale of all our loose Sri Lankan sapphires back into Sri Lankan education and reconstruction projects.
